Former zoo, circus elephant Ruby dies at sanctuary

Officials say a 50-year-old African elephant who was moved to a sanctuary after protests over her confinement at the Los Angeles Zoo has died.

Ruby died Tuesday at the Performing Animal Welfare Society elephant sanctuary in San Andreas.

Sanctuary director Pat Derby says she, the veterinarian and the entire elephant staff was with Ruby when she died.

Derby says a necropsy is being performed at the University of California, Davis.

Ruby spent 20 years at the Los Angeles Zoo. Before that, Derby says she was transferred several times and performed with the circus.

The zoo says Ruby was one of the oldest African elephants in captivity.

Entertainer Bob Barker donated $300,000 to help pay Ruby's sanctuary expenses.
