More than 30 immigration lawyers offered free legal advice on Friday at La Placita Church on LA’s Olvera Street.

Mary Mucha runs the LA County Bar Association’s immigration assistance program. She says a lot of immigrants facing deportation don’t know they have rights.

“ICE, the enforcement agency-for immigration, their job is not to tell you your rights. Their job is to take you out of the country,” says Mucha. “So we’re trying to get between them and make that if people want to leave and go outside of the country, that’s fine. But if they want to go see an immigration judge, they have the right to do so and make this offer of applications before the court.”

The Los Angeles County Bar Association has organized the annual immigration fair at the church for more than 20 years.
