14-year-old driver gravely injured after driving SUV into San Fernando Valley storm channel

Los Angeles police say a 14-year-old girl is in grave condition after she drove an SUV into a San Fernando Valley storm channel.

Lindsey Woodward of Sunland remains hospitalized Wednesday with head and chest injuries. Sgt. David Mascarenas says her injuries are life-threatening.

The accident occurred Tuesday night during a youth event at the Sunland Neighborhood Evangelical Church.

Mascarenas says the girl started up the SUV and backed up but lost control and crashed through a chain-link fence. The car plunged 11 1/2 feet into a storm channel.

The girl's passenger, 18-year-old Haily Kinikin of Sun Valley, was treated for minor injuries.
