2 men arrested after lasers flash LAPD helicopters

Two men have been arrested for allegedly pointing a laser device at a Los Angeles police helicopter that was searching for them.

Police Sgt. Mel Stevenson says 22-year-old Floyd Atkins and 20-year-old Alvaro Jimenez were arrested early Monday at a home near downtown Los Angeles where two lasers were found.

Stevenson tells the Los Angeles Times that the men were spotted when they shot a laser at a helicopter pilot who was searching for them after they apparently used the device on another police chopper.

He says the FBI will be notified so they can investigate possible connections to a string of incidents involving lasers aimed at commercial jets and other aircraft.

Astronomers use such lasers to identify constellations. Aimed at aircraft, they can temporarily blind pilots and cause retina damage.
