Fatal crash, fire snarls traffic on Pasadena Freeway

A car caught fire following a crash on the Pasadena (101) Freeway at York Boulevard Friday evening, killing an toddler inside, according to authorities on the scene.

Drivers at the site of the crash attempted to rescue the toddler, but were unable to get into the vehicle on time.

Firefighters and ambulances were on the scene. Soon after the accident, South Pasadena Police Chief Joe Payne said he was unclear what caused the crash. He said police were questioning the child's mother. Payne reported he believed the infant killed was a two year-old girl.

Witnesses said a GMC Yukon may have been involved. Traffic was at a standstill for more than an hour.
