Woman crushed while trying to escape stuck elevator at Cal State Long Beach

Authorities say a school employee has been found dead inside an elevator shaft at California State University, Long Beach. Fire Capt. Rich Brandt says the woman apparently tried to climb out of an elevator stuck between floors in the Foundation Building on Wednesday morning and was crushed when it suddenly shifted.

She died at the scene.

The woman has been identified as Annette Lujan, 48, of Huntington Beach. She worked in the Foundations building for nine years, the Daily 49er reports.

University Police received a call around 9 a.m. reporting that an individual was stuck in an elevator. The woman died before the police and Long Beach Fire Department arrived, according to Toni Beron, associate vice president of university relations.

Beron added that a person had been trying to assist Lujan.

It took the Urban Search and Rescue Team almost an hour and a half to lift the 2,000 pound elevator.

University police are investigating the accident with the help of local authorities.
