A car theft suspect was shot to death during a gun battle with LAPD in South L.A.

Investigators say police officers spotted a car stolen in Long Beach and pulled over the driver Wednesday evening in the Pico-Union District.

As the vehicle neared Washington Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, it struck a van. Officer Norma Eisenman told City News Service that at that point the driver jumped out of the car and began firing at officers. A squad car was peppered with bullets but the officers weren't hurt.

The bullets struck at least two police cruisers, Officer Norma Eisenman said. Officers returned fire and hit the man, who was taken immediately to a hospital nearby. He died at a short time later.

His name hasn't been released.

There are no other details. Sgt. Cathy Reyes says detectives were still at the shooting scene before dawn Thursday.

The revolver was recovered from the scene, reports the L.A. Times.
