Congressman Lungren shares holiday Jell-O recipe

Public radio fans know well the cranberry concoction NPR’s Susan Stamberg tries to coax us to make every Thanksgiving. We found a Capitol Hill version that one Congressman describes as “a delicious complement to holiday meals.” Warning: Jell-O alert.

There seems to be some confusion about what exactly that sweet red concoction is on the Lungren holiday table. Republican Congressman Dan Lungren says the recipe comes from his mom.

For years, his wife's made it with cherry Jell-O, cranberry sauce, and sour cream. He calls it “cranberry gel.” But his kindergarten granddaughter had to do a report in school about what they do for the holidays "and she talked about how they always go over to Grandma’s house and Grandma has this wonderful strawberry pie."

The Congressman from Folsom says it’s a hit with Lungrens of all generations. And it’s easy to make: just 3 ingredients.

Congressman Dan Lungren's Cranberry Gel recipe

1 large package cherry Jell-O

2 cans jellied cranberry

2 large containers sour cream

Dissolve Jell-O in 1 cup boiling water. Make sure all Jell-O is thoroughly dissolved. Add 2 cans cranberry and 2 containers of sour cream and mix with electric mixer until thoroughly blended. Pour into a mold and refrigerate overnight. Makes a delicious complement to holiday meals. Serves 12.
