San Bernardino still doesn’t know who its next city clerk will be, after just three votes separated the candidates in a runoff election. Their recount is set for Tuesday.

Veteran county employee Amelia Sanchez-Lopez was on the losing end of this month’s mail-in run-off election against Gigi Hanna, who works in public relations.

Sanchez-Lopez filed for the recount last week.

The candidates are vying for a seat being vacated by retiring city clerk Rachel Clark. Sanchez-Lopez has drawn fire for her close ties to city attorney Jim Penman. Penman helped bankroll the would-be candidate’s campaign and has reportedly coached her at public appearances.

More than 12,000 ballots from the Feb. 7 election will be loaded into vote tabulation machines at the San Bernardino County registrar’s office. Results are expected the same day.

Either candidate can challenge the outcome in court.
