Los Angeles prosecutors say a Compton girl has been convicted of killing her mother and stepfather after testifying this week that she went shopping for a Halloween party with her mom's body still in the car.

Deputy District Attorney Kristin Trutanich says a jury found 16-year-old Cynthia Alvarez guilty of murder Friday.

Prosecutors say 58-year-old Gloria Villalta and 51-year-old Jose Lara were killed sometime between Oct. 13 and Oct. 15, 2011.

Alvarez testified that she and her boyfriend Giovanni Gallardo buried her stepfather the night of the killings. Her mother's body would not fit in the same shallow grave, so they kept it in the back of the car and went shopping for party supplies.

Alvarez is due for sentencing June 21. Gallardo goes on trial for the slayings Monday.
