A Palmdale couple has been arrested after the woman's 8-year-old son died after being rushed to the hospital with burns and a broken skull and ribs.

An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of Gabriel Fernandez's death on Friday, the Los Angeles County Coroner's office said.

The boy's mother, Pearl Fernandez, 29, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of child abuse, while her boyfriend Isauro Aguirre was taken into custody for investigation of attempted murder, authorities said.

Sheriff's Sgt. Brian Hudson said firefighters called to an apartment Wednesday night found the boy wasn't breathing. He was treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital.

A neighbor, Claudia Sergoviano, told KCAL-TV that whenever she saw the boy he was covered in bruises.

Child welfare officials removed two other children from the home.

Working telephone listings couldn't be found for Aguirre or Fernandez.
