A police pursuit in Santa Ana ended in tragedy Thursday afternoon after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a suspect vehicle officers were chasing.

The chase began on the 1000 block of West Central Avenue. Police shot at the suspect driving a White Dodge Charger. Three other people were also in the car.

Santa Ana Police Corporal Anthony Bertanga said the suspects then continued southbound on Flower Street.

"They get to MacArthur and there's a pedestrian in the crosswalk; They strike the pedestrian," Bertanga said. "That pedestrian has died here at the scene. The suspects' vehicle then comes to a stop. It was damaged to where it stopped here at the scene."

After the collision, three of the suspects fled on foot in different directions.

"We had a helicopter overhead. He assisted the officers," said Bertanga. " One of the suspects was located by a K9 and taken into custody."

Officers later found the other two suspects and also took them into custody. The one who was shot by police is in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

Bertanga wouldn't say if the suspects were armed or what prompted the pursuit.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the four culprits, nor that of the pedestrian.
