Santa Ana police say a man was unarmed when he was shot and killed by an officer after a foot chase from a McDonald's to a nearby juice store.

Interim police Chief Carlos Rojas said at a news conference Wednesday that 22-year-old transient Hans Arrellano was shot once by a 13-year department veteran whose name was withheld.

Rojas says the officer had a stun gun, but when asked why that wasn't used said only that all aspects of the incident were under investigation.

Another officer involved in the chase did not shoot.

Police say Arrellano, who has a second-degree burglary conviction, was being combative Tuesday in the McDonald's parking lot when police arrived. He ran for about a half-mile then had a confrontation with police that led to the shooting.
