UPDATED: Canyon Fire: Firefighters close to containing brush fire near foothill homes (Map)

Update 5:00 p.m.: Authorities have reduced the acreage of a brushfire near homes in the La Verne area of eastern Los Angeles County and say they're close to containing it.

County fire Inspector Keith Mora says the blaze, originally estimated at 40 acres, is actually about 27 acres. He also says there's no active flame showing and crews are expecting to knock down the blaze shortly.

The fire erupted at Broken Spur and Roughrider Roads in along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains shortly before 1 p.m. Friday.

The Sheriff's Department evacuated nearby homes and a children's center but the only damage was to an outbuilding.

More than 100 firefighters, two Super Scooper airplanes and three helicopters are fighting the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
