A school science experiment went awry Tuesday at a high school in Watts, causing an explosion that injured several students.

Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Scott Miller said the outdoor explosion happened around 9:30 a.m., prompting a partial evacuation of Animo Watts Charter High School on Avalon Boulevard.

"The teacher was doing an experiment engaging how fast a marble could exit a cannon. He had the students at what he perceived was a safe distance. The result was that the cannon ended up exploding," Miller said.

Ten students suffered minor injures, along with three adults.

The cause and the chemicals that were used during the physics experiment are still under investigation.
