A man has pleaded guilty to killing eight people, including his ex-wife, in a shooting rampage at a California hair salon in 2011.

Scott Dekraai entered his plea Friday to eight counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in Orange County Superior Court.

Authorities said the 44-year-old Dekraai opened fire on Salon Meritage in Seal Beach. He and his ex-wife were locked in a custody dispute over their 8-year-old son.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Dekraai's lawyer says his client entered the plea to spare victims' relatives from sitting through a trial. However, he said Dekraai will fight to keep from being sentenced to death.
