Rialto police are searching for a man who pulled out an assault rifle as he exited his vehicle during a traffic stop early Wednesday. he's also suspected of being involved in an earlier drive-by shooting, according to NBC4 and CBSLA.com.

Police say the traffic stop occurred in the 900 block of East Mesa Drive around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday after an officer saw two vehicles traveling at a "high rate of speed."

One of the drivers exited the vehicle with an assault rifle, according to police, and the officer opened fire believing he was about to be fired upon.

The suspect then ducked into a nearby residence, and when SWAT arrived to search, he was gone. He is believed to be injured and is considered armed and dangerous.

The suspect, identified as parolee Darnell White III, was identified as a parolee with "an extensive criminal history" and is considered armed and dangerous.
