A man died after being shot near a fast food restaurant in Silver Lake late Thursday morning, according to police.

The shooting occurred at about 10:55 a.m. in the 4300 block of Sunset Boulevard near Fountain Avenue, Los Angeles Police Det. Meghan Aguilar told KPCC.

The 20-year-old male victim was transported to USC Medical Center but later died of his wounds. The suspect, also male, was in his late teens.

The two were involved in a verbal dispute, and at some point the suspect shot the victim and left the scene in a dark vehicle, Aguilar said.

Police believe the shooting was potentially gang-related, Aguilar said.

Investigators were still at the crime scene several hours later.

There were separate reports that Thomas Starr King Middle School, which is nearby, was on lockdown, but Aguilar could not immediately confirm if the two incidents were related.
