Vets try to save leg of dog hit by stolen van in Los Angeles police chase

Veterinarians are trying to save the leg of a fluffy white dog named Gordo who was run down by a stolen van during a wild police chase in Los Angeles.

The young Maltese mix suffered a deep cut to a rear leg and a broken hip Wednesday night. A vet says Gordo will have part of his hip joint removed during surgery Thursday.

TV helicopters showed the dog being struck while running in the street near the end of a chase that lasted more than an hour.

Authorities had blown out the van tires with a spike strip. A vet says a hot rim may have cut Gordo but cauterized the wound so he didn't bleed to death.

A man and woman in the van have been arrested.
