The daughter of a Los Angeles police sergeant is going to prison for killing a bicyclist in a hit-and-run accident.

Vanessa Yanez of Gardena was sentenced Thursday to two years in state prison for killing 60-year-old Jesse Dotson Jr. in June.

Dotson, a postal worker, was struck as he biked to work in Gardena. Prosecutors say the driver fled the scene and later falsely reported the car stolen.

Dotson died three days after the crash.

His daughter, Alyssa Dotson, tells the Daily Breeze of Torrance that she believed her father might have survived had Yanez stopped and called 911.

Yanez pleaded no contest last month to felony charges of perjury and leaving the scene of an accident and to a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter.
