Bell Gardens Mayor Daniel Crespo, 46, was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon, officials with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department confirmed to KPCC.

Sheriff's Deputy Amber Smith said Crespo was shot several times by his wife, Lyvette, during a fight about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lyvette Crespo is in the custody of the Bell Gardens Police Department, police said. Daniel Crespo and Lyvette got into an argument around 2:30 p.m. at their home, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

Their 19-year-old son, Daniel Jr., got involved in the altercation with his father and Lyvette produced a weapon and shot her husband "multiple times in the torso," according to the Sheriff's Department.

Eighteen-year-old neighbor Maria Rios said that the mayor was attentive to her and others in their complex.

"Especially me as a teenager, he always wanted to make sure everything was going fine," said Rios. "He would do a lot of activities for us in the apartments, as a whole family. He was always giving us tickets to go to games, stuff like that."

Rios said that Crespo always helped her family.

"Everybody loved him, just because he was so caring towards us," Rios said.

L.A. Sheriff's Department homicide detectives responded to the shooting in the 6300 block of Gage to assist the Bell Gardens PD, according to officials. Public records show that Crespo owns a condominium in the 6300 block of Gage.
