5:03  p.m.: Southern California candidates Carr, Lieu debate for Waxman's seat on KPCC

The retirement of U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman, who has represented the South Bay, Westside and San Fernando Valley for nearly 40 years, has set off one of the costliest election battles in the state of California.

Wednesday night's debate at the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles should help the voting public figure out the differences between Assistant District Attorney Elan Carr, a Republican, and Democratic state Sen. Ted Lieu.

Some of the topics they will discuss were raised by voters during KPCC's visit to a Westside coffee shop last week. Watch some of their questions below:

Other questions will come from Wednesday night's audience.

This debate is jointly presented by KPCC, Southern California Public Radio and the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at the University of Southern California, and will be hosted by The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. The debate will be co-moderated by KPCC's Larry Mantle and USC's Dan Schnur.

The event at the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles is sold out, but you can watch live video on KPCC.org beginning at 7 p.m. or Thursday during the second half of "AirTalk" at noon.
