A suspect has been arrested in the assault that left a man hospitalized Monday afternoon at Griffith Park.

Tyrone C. Isumu, 54, was arrested at about 7:30 p.m. and booked on suspicion of attempted murder, Los Angeles Police Officer Norma Eisenman told KPCC.

The incident started when two people at an encampment, apparently homeless, got involved in a verbal dispute, Eisenman said. The suspect then picked up a heavy trash can and used it as a weapon.

The victim was transported by paramedics by helicopter to the hospital.

Police weren't releasing the victim's name but said on last check the person was still in critical condition.

Earlier reports suggested the victim was a hiker. The victim was found on a hiking trail in the popular L.A. park.

Isumu was being held on $500,000 bail.
