Police shoot, kill man at Hollywood and Highland; say suspect had a knife (updated)

Police have shot and killed a suspect they say was armed with a knife on a busy Friday evening at the famed intersection of Hollywood and Highland, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Police said the shooting occurred at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue about 7 p.m. after LAPD's Hollywood Division received a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

Los Angeles police told the Associated Press that officers answering a report of assault with a deadly weapon shot and injured the armed man at about 7 p.m.

LAPD spokeswoman Meghan Aguilar told the AP that the man had a knife and was shot while he was approaching officers.

They say he was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.

The shooting scene is right next to the Walk of Fame, the Dolby Theatre that hosts the Academy Awards and other Hollywood tourist attractions.

Police closed the busy intersection while they investigated the shooting.
