LAPD detective found dead after sex allegations, police say

Authorities say a Los Angeles Police Department detective who once investigated sexual assault cases killed himself Thanksgiving morning after two people accused him of sexually abusing them.

The body of 52-year-old Dennis Derr was found in his car Nov. 27 in a parking lot in Palmdale.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office tells the Los Angeles Times that the 17-year LAPD veteran died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The newspaper says Sgt. Brian Hudson of the county Sheriff's Department special victims bureau confirms that two adults made sexual abuse allegations against Derr shortly before he committed suicide.

When he died, Derr was assigned to theft cases. Records show that for at least a few years earlier in his career, he belonged to a team that handled sexual assault cases.
