Drivers in the Santa Fe Springs area this weekend will find some freeway closures. Caltrans will begin demolition of the old Carmenita Road Bridge above the Santa Ana Freeway.
Officials expect the project to take three weeks. During that time, they will close the 5 freeway overnight seven days a week between Rosecrans and Valley View avenues.
Caltrans spokesman Patrick Chandler says this is all part of the Carmenita Road Interchange project:
"So far we've built the new Carmenita Bridge. It's going to be a 10-lane bridge, you know basically four lanes on each side with two left turn pockets. But we're also going to need to build on and offramps that connect to the I-5 below. And so to do that, we have to demolish the old Carmenita Bridge, which was built in the early 50's, which is just a two-lane road..."
The freeway closure times are:
- Friday nights through Sunday mornings, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Monday nights through Friday mornings, midnight to 5 a.m.
The closures are subject to change. Keep an eye out for detour signs.
