12:13 p.m.: Building fire with metal shavings burning forces evacuations in Carson

Firefighters responded to a burning commercial building in Carson after the Los Angeles County Fire Department received 911 calls Tuesday morning, according to Randall Wright of the L.A. County Fire Department.

About 50 firefighters, hazmat teams and investigators were on the scene at the 200 block of East Gardena Boulevard, a business area, Wright said. The fire started at approximately 10:15 a.m. There were two fires — one inside and another outside the building.

There were metal shavings burning, Wright said. The cause was still under investigation.

"We're in a defensive posture,” said Wright. “We're letting the fire burn itself out due to there being metal."

Businesses within a block of the burning one-story structure were evacuated, Wright said. No injuries had been reported.

"Putting water on metal shavings is very dangerous, so we're making a game plan of working on exposures to make sure the fire doesn't spread,” said Wright.
