1 dead following El Monte police standoff, home fire

One person was killed in a police standoff and shooting at an El Monte home, NBC L.A. reports, following a fire at the home — a woman in her 70s who was found after the fire and later died at the hospital.

When officers arrived, they found a man holding a woman hostage at knife point, according to NBC L.A. The victim had apparently suffered burns over a large portion of her body, they report, citing the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

When the man with the knife refused to put it down, officers opened fire, NBC L.A. reports. The attacker was also burned, and a man in his late 40s was found in the street and also suffered burns.

The fire was reported at around 7:30 a.m. before being knocked down around 7:50 a.m.
