Los Angeles police shot and killed a suspect armed with a sharp object after he slashed a SWAT officer during a standoff in Sylmar, LAPD Officer Ricardo Hernandez told KPCC.
Police Lt. Megan Aguilar says officers responded to a home Tuesday evening following a call of a possibly mentally ill man. Officers struggled with the man and tried to use a stun gun to subdue him, but he managed to get away and barricade himself inside.
Aguilar says after negotiations failed, SWAT officers used gas and beanbag rounds to get the man out. Aguilar says when SWAT went inside early Wednesday, an officer was cut and the suspect was shot.
The suspect, who was not identified, was hospitalized in critical condition before later succumbing to his wounds, Hernandez said.
The SWAT officer was treated for a laceration to his arm.
