Update at 4:25 p.m.: The suspect has been identified as 47-year-old Jose Luis Chavez, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff’s deputies and West Covina police are searching Saturday for a man who shot a West Covina police officer late Friday night. The officer, shot in the upper torso, is in stable condition and his injury isn’t considered life-threatening, according to authorities.

The shooting happened at 11:18 p.m. Friday on North Yaleton Avenue, north of Badillo Street, according to Sheriff's Deputy Juanita Navarro.

The West Covina police officer approached a man on a bicycle and the exchange led to a gunfight between the two. The officer sustained his injury during that gunfight, while the suspect is still at large.

Navarro told KPCC it's unknown if the suspect was also shot during the incident, but added, "We have a lot of personnel out there, around the clock, trying to the bring the suspect into custody."

The West Covina Police Department's chief tweeted out an update of the officer's condition.
