Chimney Fire burns 1,000 acres

The Chimney Fire started burning Wednesday afternoon in and near the Owens Peak and Chimney Peak wilderness areas on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

Due to the fire, the Pacific Crest Trail is closed between Highway 178 and Kennedy Meadows, according to an official online information page. Canebreak Road is also closed, and Nine Mile Road is closed except to emergency vehicles.

There were approximately 300 firefighters on scene as of Thursday morning.
