A man suspected of driving under the influence was shot and killed by El Monte police officers Friday night after leading police on a chase and then driving his mid-sized SUV toward them, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. after an officer tried to pull over the DUI suspect near Valley Boulevard and Tyler Avenue, said Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating. A chase ensued, during which the suspect's vehicle struck a motorist's car, and a pursuing police vehicle collided with another car, Saldana said.

The chase continued to a cul de sac at Fieldcrest Street and Esto Avenue, where the suspect's vehicle stopped and three officers got out of their cars to apprehend him, the deputy said.

"Suspect then drove into the cul de sac, turned around, and drove toward the officers, who were standing outside their vehicles," Saldana said. "An officer-involved-shooting occurred at that time. The suspect was struck by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene."

A cellphone video shot by a resident in the neighborhood and posted by KPCC media partner NBC4 recorded sounds of numerous gunshots.

The man who was killed has not yet been identified. Officials said there was no indication he was armed.

Both the officer whose vehicle collided with another car during the chase and the motorist in that vehicle were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
