Gov. Jerry Brown is calling a special election June 6 and a primary April 4 to replace Xavier Becerra in Congress.
Becerra resigned his position representing the 34th Congressional District in Los Angeles before he was sworn in as California's attorney general on Tuesday.
Becerra's departure after 24 years in Congress creates a rare and unexpected opening in the heavily Democratic district that includes downtown Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, Chinatown and Highland Park.
At least a dozen people have expressed interest in running. Former state Assembly Speaker John Perez was an early front-runner but dropped out citing health concerns.
