Two people and an off-duty LAPD officer were hospitalized after an early morning officer-involved shooting Monday in Downey, according to authorities.

Officer Sal Ramirez of the the LAPD told KPCC that Downey police got the call to respond to the 7800 block of Borson Street at about 1 a.m. on Monday morning.

When the officers arrived, they encountered an off-duty police officer from LAPD’s Olympic division, who then told them he was part of an officer-involved shooting after confronting two suspects.

The details of what happened exactly during this confrontation are unknown, but the unnamed, undescribed suspects were taken to the hospital. Their conditions are also unknown. The LAPD officer’s injuries were minor and not life-threatening, Ramirez said.

Downey police and the LAPD are teaming up on the investigation – Downey PD will be handling the criminal aspects, while LAPD handles the administrative part, Ramirez said.
