Gardena police shot a man to death after he fired a weapon in a parking lot Thursday night, according to authorities.
The incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, when Gardena police officers patrolling near 1000 W. Rosecrans Ave. noticed a disturbance in the parking lot of a business, according to a Sgt. Aura Sierra of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which is handling the investigation.
The officers stopped to a aid a security guard in handling an altercation among patrons at the business when the suspect then fired at least one round in an unknown direction and fled from the parking lot, authorities said.
Gardena police tried to apprehend the man when the officer-involved shooting occurred, authorities said. The suspect was struck at least once in the upper torso and was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Two guns believed to belong to the suspect were recovered. Other details were not available.
