Police shot and killed an armed woman Wednesday around midnight near the the El Dorado neighborhood of Long Beach.

Officers responded to a call about shots fired and a person with a gun. When they arrived at Studebaker Road and East Spring Street, they encountered a woman with a gun and her male companion.

What exactly led to the shooting and who fired first remain unclear, but the female suspect was hit by gunfire.

"Officers administered lifesaving measures until fire department personnel arrived," Long Beach Police Department spokesperson Marlene Arrona tells KPCC. "Fire department personnel determined the suspect deceased at the scene."

A handgun was recovered at the scene. No one else was harmed.

Officials are treating the suspect's male companion as a victim. They say the two knew each other, but their exact relationship has not been revealed.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
