Los Angeles authorities are investigating the death of an inmate who fell unconscious after he was pepper-sprayed as he assaulted a cellmate at the Men's Central Jail.

Sheriff's Deputy Trina Schrader says the death was reported Tuesday afternoon around 2:40 p.m. at the downtown jail.

Schrader says a deputy initially responded when they heard yelling from inside a cell.

"He saw a male Hispanic inmate yelling, and then begin to assault his cellmate," Deputy Sheriff Kimberly Alexander said.

She says the inmate was sprayed to stop the assault then handcuffed and brought to a shower area for decontamination.

The inmate began to feel ill and passed out in the shower. Paramedics were unable to resuscitate him and he died at the scene.

An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Schrader says the dead man's cellmate suffered minor injuries in the assault.
