Getting cooped up with your friends and relatives that are in town this weekend? Take them out around town. Our list includes the L.A. version of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, holiday markets, local shopping and a spectacular neighborhood lights display. The best part is that all of it is free (or practically free).
WHEN: Sundays, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
WHERE: 785 Bay St., DTLA MAP
This is a friendly reminder that Smorgasburg LA, a weekly gathering of some of the best food vendors in L.A., is still going. It's not just a summer thing. If you've still got relatives in town, this is a must do. Everyone can find something they'll love to eat. Through the holiday season, there will also be an expanded shopping section with local vendors and a holiday photo booth. Word on the street is that celebrity chef Jamie Oliver will be there as well this weekend.
Small Business Saturday
WHEN: Saturday, Nov. 25
WHERE: Various locations
Maybe save your money on Black Friday and buy local instead. Several area cities are hosting Small Business Saturday events. Eagle Rock is hosting their 7th annual shopping extravaganza, including games, face painting and live music. The Arroyo Seco Marketplace at the Audubon Center in Debs Park is the perfect place to look for unique, handcrafted gifts made from recycled and natural materials. The Port of L.A. is holding a Small Business Saturday event for people who might need a few wine tastings to get through the holiday shopping.
The LA Philharmonic is playing some very familiar and famous pieces of classical music at a free concert at the Ingalls Auditorium this weekend. The program includes Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy and Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite. Tickets are free, but you do have to reserve them by phone.
"Coco" is Disney/Pixar's latest animated feature film and looks like it could be the family movie of the season (even if the movie is about Día de los Muertos). It has a 96 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and critics are praising the filmmakers for their commitment to portraying the Mexican culture accurately. The fun part about seeing "Coco" at the El Capitan Theatre is the pre-show, which features performances from the Mariachi Divas and the Ballet Folklorico de Los Ángeles, along with a dazzling light show.
WHEN: Sunday, Nov. 26, 5 p.m.
WHERE: Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard
New York has the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and L.A. has the Hollywood Christmas Parade. Expect to see huge balloons, marching bands and tons of entertainers on a massive red carpet. This year's performers include Cee Lo Green and The Village People.
WHEN: Saturday, Nov. 25 - Sunday, Nov. 26, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
WHERE: Craft & Folk Art Museum, Miracle Mile MAP
Another craft sale, but this one is so special that it deserves its own listing. Check out some of the art, toys, jewelry and crafts made by local artists. There will be cute felt animals, geometric-centric pottery and more. Treat yourself or one of your friends to something from this market.
WHEN: Friday, Nov. 24, 6 p.m.
WHERE: 3901 Longview Valley Rd, Sherman Oaks MAP
This front yard has everything you could want from a lights display: animatronics, projections and a killer soundtrack. No wonder creator Mike Ziemkowski was a winner in ABC's "Great Christmas Light Fight." Every year, this local homeowner goes all out with the Christmas lights and draws plenty of visitors to his neighborhood to see the spectacle.
