Public health authorities in Orange County say a bat found in an Anaheim shopping center parking lot on Tuesday tested positive for rabies.
Officials say anyone who came in physical contact with the bat or saw someone else do so at Canyon Terrace Shopping Center should call the Orange County Health Care Agency.
Rabies is nearly always fatal once a person begins showing symptoms, so it's important to get medical treatment to stop the virus from causing illness in anyone who has been exposed.
Rabies can be transmitted to people by a bite from an animal. Bats have very small teeth and their bites may go unnoticed.
In rare cases, the virus can be transmitted when a rabid animal's saliva gets into a person's eyes, mouth or an open wound.
