Authorities say a man in his 70s who was shot and wounded when he opened the front door of his Redondo Beach home is a retired Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy.
Investigators say the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Thursday when the suspect asked for someone by name. The resident expressed confusion and the man opened fire.
The victim was shot in the abdomen and wrist and was taken to a hospital for surgery. He was able to talk to police.
Officers searched the neighborhood for a suspect. Detectives have not named a possible motive.
The victim was not immediately identified. L.A. County sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida says he retired from the department in 1978.
