California’s midterm election may be over, but there are millions of ballots across the state that officials are still counting, with a handful of key Southern California races remaining too close to call.
Hanging in the balance are these contests:
- 39th Congressional District: 1,957 votes separate the current leader, Republican Young Kim, from Democrat Gil Cisneros. They are seeking an open seat held by Ed Royce, a GOP congressman who is stepping down. The district straddles Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties.
- 45th Congressional District: GOP incumbent Mimi Walters is 1,011 votes ahead of Democratic challenger Katie Porter in this Orange County district. It’s one of a handful in the region targeted by Democrats as part of the party’s effort to retake the U.S. House.
- L.A. County Sheriff: The current sheriff, Jim McDonnell, is trailing his challenger, Alex Villanueva, in a race where 335 votes separate the two.
