The Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks used to run 26 child care programs, but after recession-era budget cuts, that number shrank to just two.

On Wednesday, Councilmember Paul Krekorian proposed that the city work toward restoring those programs -- at the very least putting one in each of the fifteen council districts.

To make this happen, the budget chair has his eyes on securing a piece of the nearly 2 billion dollars in early childhood funding proposed in Gov. Gavin Newsom's budget. But he’s also thinking about long-term, local funding. His goal is to put the idea of a child care fund before voters in 2020.
