The California State University system requires three years of high school math for admission, but a proposal in the works would require a fourth year of either math or a class like economics or computer science.

Cal State officials say the new requirement -- which would take effect in 2026 -- would better prepare high school graduates for college. Critics say the change would would disproportionately impact black and Latino students.

The proposal is expected to come up for a vote this fall.
